Missing Myah: Purina Moist & Meaty Steak Flavor Is Mediocre

The Good: Myah enjoyed it, Good ingredients/nutrition
The Bad: Expensive, Environmental impact of the packaging
The Basics: Purina Moist & Meaty Steak Flavor dog food is better as an additive than its own food.

Tonight, I am missing Myah. Back in March, my incredible Siberian Husky Myah abruptly suffered kidney failure and we had to put her to sleep to save her from suffering. Myah left a huge hole in my heart and stacks of products that I had stockpiled for her. One of the products that she had enjoyed before her death was Purina Moist & Meaty Steak Flavor dog food. I picked up several boxes of Purina Moist & Meaty Steak Flavor dog food when they went into an 80% off clearance at, of all places, my local grocery store.

Myah liked the Purina Moist & Meaty Steak Flavor well-enough, but she seemed more eager to consume the meaty pieces as a substitute for human-grade meat when I would put it in the Honest Kitchen Grain Free Beef Recipe Dog Food (reviewed here!). Despite the good ingredients and nutritional benefits, Myah was more neutral to the Purina Moist & Meaty Steak Flavor dog food on its own, as opposed to using it as an additive to other, dry, dog foods.

Basics

A single serving of Purina Moist & Meaty Steak Flavor dog food is two to three pre-measured plastic pouches filled with food for a big dog like Myah, spread out over a while day. The box of twelve packets, then, lasts less than a week. As a result, this is an exceptionally expensive dog food to feed most big dogs at full price. The Purina Moist & Meaty Steak Flavor dog food is comprised of soft meat blocks that are 1/2" on each side cubes.

Ease Of Preparation

As a soft dog food, preparation of Purina Moist & Meaty Steak Flavor dog food is as easy as opening each packet of food from the box and pouring the food into a dog's dish. There is no further prep needed.

Myah’s Reaction

The Purina Moist & Meaty Steak Flavor dog food smells only mildly meaty. The meat scent is not specific to steak and it does not endure very long once the plastic packet is opened. Instead, the Purina Moist & Meaty Steak Flavor dog food quickly loses its aroma. Myah tended to respond more to the "plunk" sound of the soft pieces hitting her metal dog dish, as opposed to the scent. Myah would eat the Purina Moist & Meaty Steak Flavor dog food when there was nothing else around, but she was not overly enthusiastic about it. Instead, she seemed to consume it most eagerly when it was an additive in another dog food that she either expected real meat in or was not nearly as enthusiastic about. On its own, though, Myah did not rush to consume the Purina Moist & Meaty Steak Flavor dog food.

Nutrition

Purina Moist & Meaty Steak Flavor dog food smells somewhat meaty, so it is unsurprising that the ingredients start as recognizable meat products. Made primarily of Beef by-product, soy flour and soy grits, the ingredient list includes a ton of preservatives after "natural steak flavor." According to the guaranteed analysis, Purina Moist & Meaty Steak Flavor dog food has at least 18% crude protein and 7% crude fat, but no more than 3% crude fiber and 33% moisture. As a semi-moist dog food, it is highly recommended that you have adequate water available for your dog when serving your pet Purina Moist & Meaty Steak Flavor dog food.

Overall

Purina Moist & Meaty Steak Flavor dog food is a simple dog food that is not overly great for its environmental impact or its expense, but it at least provided Myah with additional variety in her too-brief life. It is a good additive, but a poor dog food on its own.
