Fannie May Mint Meltaways Are Fun, But Not Flawless.

The Good: Good initial flavor, Does not taste bad/no bad ingredients
The Bad: Comparatively expensive, Low nutritional value, Center is not overly chocolate flavored
The Basics: Fannie May Mint Meltaways are supposed to be a high-quality, high-end chocolate, but they taste a lot less flavorful for the price.

During my recent vacation, my wife picked up a box of Fannie May Mint Meltaways. My wife knows quite well my love of all things mint chocolate and when I returned home, she was quite enthusiastic about her purchase. She is exceptionally sweet and the thought behind the gift was a very nice one. And the Fannie May Mint Meltaways are good.

Unfortunately, I used to work in malls that had Fannie May Chocolatiers and I enjoyed their products quite a bit back in the day. But I also came to recognize that many of Fannie May's products were more average than exceptional and when price was factored in, I found them to be less than thrilling. The Fannie May Mint Meltaways are a fairly good example of that. These chocolates are milky and sweet with a mild mint flavor to their outer shell; but they are not solidly or distinctly flavorful. The result is a chocolate that is competing in a marketplace where it is outclassed by its competitors.

Basics

Fannie May Mint Meltaways are a chocolate available year-round by the chocolatier Fannie May. The Fannie May Mint Meltaways are little cubes of green mint white chocolate that coat a milk chocolate center. Each individually-wrapped chocolate is 7/8" by 7/8" and 3/4" thick. The box of Fannie May Mint Meltaways my wife found us included 23 individually-wrapped candies.

Ease Of Preparation

These are candy, so preparing them is as simple as opening the box, pulling out a candy and unwrapping each candy. There is no trick or mystery to eating Fannie May Mint Meltaways. As long as you have opposable thumbs and a mouth, the Mint Meltaways are pretty easy to consume.

Taste

The Fannie May Mint Meltaways smell sweet and minty. The peppermint aroma is muted some by the white chocolate medium of the exterior. There is no hint in the bouquet of the chocolate center of the Fannie May Mint Meltaways

Biting into the Mint Meltaways, consumers get a mouthful of sweet white chocolate that is effectively blended with mint flavoring. The exterior of the Fannie May Mint Meltaways contains the muted mint chocolate flavoring. Unfortunately, as the exterior melts away, the interior chocolate portion is revealed. The chocolate center is generically sweet and not overly chocolate flavored. It does not have much in the way of a mint flavor either, so the flavor transitions from minty and milky into indistinctly sweet.

The Fannie May Mint Meltaways leave a mild sweet aftertaste in the mouth that does not last very long at all.

Nutrition

These are candy and a mass produced one at that, so it is tough to look at these for something nutritious and then blame them for not being overly healthy. Fannie May Mint Meltaways are not nearly as bad as they could be on the nutrition front, though, which surprised me as the ingredient list did not degenerate into a listing of chemicals I could not pronounce. Instead, the primary ingredients sugar, cocoa butter, and chocolate liquor. There is nothing unpronounable in these candies.

A serving of the Fannie May Mint Meltaways is considered five pieces. From a single serving, Fannie May Mint Meltaways provides 240 calories, with a whopping 140 of those calories coming from fat. There is only 5mg of cholesterol and 20 mg of sodium in each Mint Meltaway. Outside carbs, there is really nothing of nutritional value in the Fannie May Mint Meltaways, save two grams of protein.

Honestly, these are candy and anyone looking to them for actual nutrition needs to get a reality check. These are not Vegan-compliant, nor are noted to be either kosher or gluten-free. There are allergy warnings for peanuts, tree nuts, soybeans, milk, eggs, and wheat.

Storage/Clean-up

The pack of these Fannie May Mint Meltaways remain fresh for quite some time. The box my wife got us just a month ago had an expiration date of September 2017, though given they are individually-wrapped, one suspects they would last well beyond that if I do not consume them all before then.

As for cleanup, throwing the wrappers away in socially appropriate places is vastly preferred to littering. Outside that, there is no real cleanup needed, unless one is eating them in a hot environment. In that case, it is likely one would need to wash their hands. If these chocolates melt, they will stain, especially light colored fabrics. Getting them to melt, unfortunately, does not take much.

Overall

Fannie May Mint Meltaways are a decent rendition of mint in white chocolate, but not an exceptional blend of mint and chocolate flavors . . . especially for the price.
