Initially Interesting, Chocolate Frosted Flakes Cereal Is Not As Impressive As It Implies!

The Good: Affordable, Good aroma, Added nutrients
The Bad: Not a strong chocolate flavor, Not as nutritious as it could be
The Basics: Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes Chocolate cereal is a strange addition to the Frosted Flakes line that underwhelms.

When it comes to the way cereals have been spinning off from traditional, familiar lines in an attempt to stay competitive, there are some odd choices. Perhaps the one that makes the most sense is Frosted Flakes Chocolate. After all, if one is trying to alter the familiar, traditional sugar-coated corn flakes, there seems like little they could do other than try a chocolate coating. Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes Chocolate is most analogous to Cocoa Pebbles cereal, though they are not quite as a chocolatey as Cocoa Pebbles.

The result is that Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes Chocolate cereal is not as impressive as the original aroma implies it will be.

Basics

Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes Chocolate cereal is the traditional sweetened corn cereal that has a slightly different glaze on the corn flakes. The cereal seems like the only real direction Kellogg’s could take Frosted Flakes in and it is a very basic cereal.

The standard box of Frosted Flakes Chocolate cereal is 14.7 oz. That represents approximately thirteen servings and I managed to get a full twelve servings out of the box I bought on clearance, with a bit of powdered, pulverized cereal at the bottom. The actual Frosted Flakes Chocolate cereal is comprised of basic flakes, nothing more.

Ease Of Preparation

Frosted Flakes Chocolate cereal is a breakfast cereal, so this is one of the low-impact breakfast options as far as preparation goes! Simply open the box of Frosted Flakes Chocolate cereal, pour out 3/4 cup (I’ve taken to using a measuring cup) and add 1/2 cup of milk to it. I have discovered, as part of getting healthy, that one of the biggest challenges one might have with breakfast cereal is actually eating the serving size recommended by the manufacturer. Given that I have been monitoring my intake for several weeks now, I am now able to enjoy only 3/4 cup of Frosted Flakes Chocolate cereal in a sitting!

For the purposes of my reviews, and my regular consumption, I only use skim milk (fat free) milk when reviewing Frosted Flakes Chocolate cereal.

Taste

Opening the box, Frosted Flakes Chocolate cereal smells invitingly like real chocolate. This cereal has a strong scent to it, which is rare for a cereal, but makes this one quite distinctive.

On its own, the Frosted Flakes Chocolate cereal is overwhelmingly sweet, with a milder chocolate flavor. The sugary flavor is fun, but it does force the chocolate flavor down on the palate. That allows many of the flakes to be dominated by the corn flake flavor that is under the chocolate/sugar glaze.

With milk, the chocolate flavor washes right off the flakes. On their own, the flakes become crispy, only slightly sweet corn flakes. The milk takes the entire chocolate flavor from the flakes. Interestingly, if one lets the Chocolate Frosted Flakes saturate with the chocolate milk, it becomes sweet and chocolatey again. The mushy flakes might be chocolatey, but the cereal is hardly pleasant in that form.

The Chocolate Frosted Flakes have a dry aftertaste.

Nutrition

Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes Chocolate cereal is not terribly nutritious on its own, though it does have vitamins and minerals sprayed on it, and with skim milk! Made primarily of milled corn, sugar and palm kernel oil, there is nothing unpronounceable in Frosted Flakes Chocolate cereal. Given that there is a separate listing of vitamins and minerals, I suspect that Frosted Flakes Chocolate cereal is one of those cereals where the nutrients are then sprayed onto the cereal, making it important to drink the milk with this cereal in order to get all of the nutritional benefits out of it.

A single serving of Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes Chocolate cereal is 30 grams, 3/4 cup. In that serving, there are 120 calories, with only ten of those calories coming from fat. There is a gram of saturated fat in this cereal, but there is no cholesterol. With 150 mg of sodium and no dietary fiber, this is not the best choice for those striving to improve heart health. With a gram of protein and 55 mg potassium, the Chocolate Frosted Flakes has a few vitamin benefits to it. On its own, this cereal has 25% of the RDA seven vitamins and minerals.

Storage/Cleanup

Frosted Flakes Chocolate is a cereal, so as long as it is kept sealed in its box, it ought to remain fresh for quite some time. Obviously, when you are done pouring the cereal from the box, fold down the plastic inner wrap to help maintain the cereal’s freshness.

Cleaning up after Frosted Flakes Chocolate cereal is simple as well. Simply brush away crumbs left by it and you are done! It is that simple! This is a cereal that does discolor the milk added to it, though, so if the milk gets on your clothing consult a fabric guide to clean it out.

Overall

Frosted Flakes Chocolate cereal is interesting, but hardly incredible, making for a tough cereal to recommend.
