The Bad: Doesn't taste like any of the promised Jelly Donut flavor, SOUR
The Basics: Dunkin’ Donuts coffee audaciously boasts of a Jelly Donut coffee flavor . . . but fails to deliver with it!
Of the established coffee manufacturers in the United States, the one I have least experience with the home brews from is Dunkin’ Donuts. For quite a while, I loved Dunkin’ Donuts shops (reviewed here!), but between the bad experience my wife had working for them and the generally unsatisfying flavors we tried (that I never bothered to review) of their buy and brew beans, I just never got around to reviewing much of their product line. But, a few months back, my wife and I were lured back to the brand with the promise of intrigue offered by their new coffee flavor: Jelly Donut. Neither my wife, nor I, believed that Dunkin’ Donuts could pull the flavor off as a coffee flavor, but we were both intrigued enough to want to try. So, when our local grocery store put the flavor on clearance, we decided it was time to give it a try.
Sadly for Dunkin’ Donuts, the presumption we had going into the coffee bore out. Even worse for the brand; while we merely feared Dunkin’ Donuts could not pull the flavor off, Dunkin’ Donuts actually created a blend that – without cream – is actually fairly sour and unpleasant!
Basics
Dunkin’ Donuts Coffee has several different flavors and I found the bag of ground Jelly Donut flavor coffee at my local grocery store on clearance. The Jelly Donut flavored Dunkin’ Donuts Coffee comes ground in a foil bag and the 11 oz. package we found was on clearance for $4.19, which was still overpriced for what it was. The bright orange bag is easy enough to open and the elevem ounce standard package is resealable, thanks to a flat tie on the top of the bag.
Ease Of Preparation
Dunkin’ Donuts Coffee is easy-enough to prepare. One Tablespoon of the Jelly Donut Dunkin’ Donuts Coffee makes two cups of coffee. We brewed up our full pot in our Hamilton Beach coffee maker (reviewed here!). The Jelly Donut coffee comes pre-ground and smells good and it is easy enough to scoop out and into a filter.
Taste
The Jelly Donut coffee smells pretty much like it is supposed to while it is brewing. There is a vaguely fruity, somewhat berry-ish scent to the coffee that blends with the familiar aroma of coffee to make it credible that the coffee is going to taste like the combination of coffee and a jelly donut.
On the flavor front, Dunkin’ Donuts Jelly Donut coffee falls down. The coffee’s flavor is almost entirely that of surprisingly weak coffee. The coffee bean flavor finishes sour, like berry juice was added to the beans. The result is not at all the flavor of jelly donuts, but rather a disturbing taste like someone really messed up making the pot of coffee. Even if there are hints of fruit, the flavor is still not Jelly Donut; the taste is not sweet, inviting or even intriguing.
With creamer, the coffee flavor actually comes close to being revealed. With creamer, the sourness is cut and the sweetness of the creamer is accented. The problem here is that while one might believe they are experiencing a milky beverage with a jelly donut, the flavor of the coffee is entirely overwhelmed. In short, it never quite tastes like it is supposed to.
The Jelly Donut coffee leaves one with a fairly sour aftertaste on the tongue that lingers in the mouth for a good ten minutes.
Nutrition
The ingredients to this coffee are virtually undisclosed. The bag lists the ingredients as coffee and artificial flavor, but nothing more descriptive than that.
In terms of nutrition, this coffee lacks any. One 8 oz. mug of this coffee provides nothing of nutritional value to the drinker. There are no calories (save what one adds from sugar or milk), no fat, sodium, or protein. The caffeine, however, is strong enough to perk one up! This is an energizing beverage, even if it does not live up to its promised flavor.
Storage/Clean-up
Dunkin’ Donuts Coffee tea is very easy to clean up after - the coffee grounds may be disposed in the garbage, or composted if you have a good garden and/or compost pile. The coffee itself is a very dark coffee and it will stain delicate fabrics, so if it spills, it ought to be cleaned right off things like tablecloths or light cottons.
Dunkin’ Donuts does not make a recommendation on refrigerating the bag, but ours remained just fine out of the refrigerator. This flavor maintains its freshness well; if we were not so disgusted by it, it would have lasted until March 2015 before it went bad.
Overall
Dunkin’ Donuts Jelly Donut coffee is a tremendously disappointing flavor of coffee and those who like flavorful coffee, jelly donuts or palatable beverages will find this one does not live up to any of those expectations.
