It’s Like A Campfire Experience Frozen In My Mouth! Breyers Blasts S’mores Ice Cream Is Delish!

The Good: Yummy, Reasonably priced, Nothing bad in it
The Bad: I wish the marshmallow ice cream flavor was a little more distinct! Very un-nutritious!
The Basics: Breyers Blasts S’mores Ice Cream is a fun new flavor that truly embodies the varied flavors of s’mores . . . except marshmallows.

When I was younger, I used to go camping a lot. In fact, for a large chunk of my youth, I went camping at least once a month. Ironically, in all that camping, the only time I actually remember having s’mores was on family camp outs. In fact, I think even the sleepaway camps from the YMCA that I attended as a kid didn’t give us s’mores (or open flames for that matter). So, when my wife leapt upon the S’mores flavor of Breyers Blasts! ice cream, I was enthusiastic. It came as a weird time for me, too; my cousin (just the day before) had mentioned that my godmother (who is in her 80’s) had never before had s’mores and she was going to rectify that with her. So, last night, my wife and I sat down to try the S’mores ice cream and I was feeling pretty nostalgic.

Breyers did not disappoint, though I found myself wishing the marshmallow flavor of the ice cream was a bit more distinctive.

The Breyers Blasts’s S’mores Ice Cream is a simple ice cream with two additives: chocolate chips and graham cracker pieces pulverized into a swirl.

Basics

Breyers Blasts ice cream comes in a typical half gallon container. The S’mores Ice Cream is a (surprisingly) mostly smooth ice cream: the basic ice cream has small chocolate chunks throughout and a few sizeable bits of graham crackers (the graham crackers are more frequently represented as a pulverized swirl.

At (locally) $5.99 a half gallon, the Breyers Blasts! ice cream is an affordable, mid-range ice cream. Apparently, in Michigan (at least this area), frozen food does not get clearance, but given that this is a brand new flavor, I would not expect it to be on the cutting block yet!

Ease Of Preparation

The S’mores Ice Cream is an ice cream. As an ice cream, preparation is ridiculously simple: one need only open the top of the container, scoop out a half cup and consume! There is no trick to preparing or eating the S’mores Ice Cream.

Taste

The smell of S’mores ice cream is dominated by graham cracker. The smell is sweet and reminiscent of honey. The aroma is inviting, but it is strongly the one flavor in the bouquet.

On the taste front, S’mores ice cream is a different flavor in every bite, which makes for an enjoyable flavor experience. The ice cream itself is very light; reminiscent of marshmallows. The ice cream is not very strongly flavored and it only seems to really take on the sweetness of marshmallows as it warms. Almost every bite is enhanced by the chocolate chunks that are in this frozen dairy dessert. As the ice cream warms slightly, these blend with the marshmallow flavoring to truly take on the mixed flavor one would expect from s’mores. Throughout the ice cream, there is a graham cracker swirl that is pulverized, dry, and sweet. The bites that have all three elements are flavored primarily by the graham cracker, though the marshmallow flavoring comes out nicely as the ice cream warms some.

Despite the weakness of the marshmallow ice cream, this frozen dairy dessert does have bites that actually taste like a frozen embodiment of s’mores!

Nutrition

The Breyers Blasts S’mores Ice Cream is a fairly heavy “frozen dairy dessert” with heavy additives. The half gallon represents twelve half-cup servings. In the half-cup serving, there are 170 calories, 70 of which are from fat. The eight grams of fat represent 12% of the RDA of fat, with 22% of one’s RDA of saturated fat coming in the 4.5 grams of saturated fat in this ice cream. One serving has 10 mg of cholesterol (that’s 3% of the RDA!) and 90 mg of Sodium (4% RDA). The only other real nutrient is two grams of protein, though there is also 8% of the RDA of Calcium in the S’mores Ice Cream.

Breyers Blasts has decent ingredients, too. Made primarily of Milk, sugar, corn syrup the S’mores is not, technically, an ice cream, though it sure mimics one well! There is nothing unpronounceable in the ingredients list. The S’mores Breyers Blasts! is Kosher, but not gluten free. There are no allergy warnings on the package.

Storage/Clean-Up

Breyers Blasts ice cream is both a frozen and a dairy product, so it is pretty obvious that it must be kept frozen in order to remain viable. Kept frozen it remains fresh for months (my half gallon had an expiration date of November 15, 2013).

The S’mores ice cream is fairly light frozen dairy dessert. However, when the ice cream melts and gets onto fabrics, it will require one to wash it right out. The chocolate pieces and graham swirl seem most obviously problematic with melting and staining. On nonporous surfaces, the ice cream wipes off exceptionally easily.

Overall

The Breyers Blasts S’mores ice cream is a delightful addition to the Breyers Blasts! line that is well worth trying, even if it is not the healthiest frozen dairy dessert from Breyers.
