Breyers Doesn’t Break It Up, Diminishing The Impact Of Their Whoppers Ice Cream!

The Good: Tastes good, Not entirely horrible on the nutrition front, Reasonably priced
The Bad: The candy additive is chunked in and makes it annoying to eat, Basic ice cream is hardly distinctive.
The Basics: I was so excited about the Breyers Blasts Whoppers Ice Cream and ended up disappointed by how the flavors within it never really came together.

I wanted to begin my review of the Breyers Blasts! Whoppers ice cream with how much I love Whoppers candy (which are reviewed on their own here!). Unfortunately, this is a good idea for an ice cream with a poor execution. I actually feel some authority writing that, too, because back in my ice cream making days (four years ago now!) one of the culinary experiments I tried that was a huge success was a coconut chocolate malted milk ball flavored ice cream. In perfecting that ice cream, I realized that to truly release the full flavor, one has to break up the malted milk balls. Breyers, alas, did not learn this lesson. As a result, Breyers Blasts! Whoppers ice cream is a surprisingly disconcerting experience of eating a smooth, fairly flavorful (if not the promised flavor) ice cream with eating hard, cold candies.

The Breyers Blasts’s Whoppers Ice Cream is a simple ice cream with multiple additives, from a fudge swirl to Hershey’s Whoppers malted milk balls.

Basics

Breyers Blasts ice cream comes in a typical half gallon container. The Whoppers Ice Cream is a chunky ice cream: the basic ice cream mixed with fudge and Whoppers candy. Virtually every bite had fudge or a malted milk ball.

At (locally) $5.99 a half gallon, the Breyers Blasts! ice cream is an affordable, mid-range ice cream.

Ease Of Preparation

The Whoppers Ice Cream is a loaded ice cream. As an ice cream, preparation is ridiculously simple: one need only open the top of the container, scoop out a half cup and consume! There is no trick to preparing or eating the Whoppers Ice Cream.

Taste

The Whopper’s ice cream smells delightfully of chocolate. The light chocolate aroma hints at fudge and malted milk balls.

On the tongue, there is a light caramel flavor to the ice cream. The moment the ice cream hits the tongue, the flavor of vanilla mixes with a caramel sweetness. This is odd considering there is not caramel specifically in this ice cream. This flavor evolves into a light chocolate flavor, like diluted chocolate milk.

The Whoppers stand out in the ice cream, requiring one to eat them as the ice cream around them melts.

Nutrition

The Breyers Blasts Whoppers Ice Cream is a frozen dairy dessert that is based with a malted vanilla ice cream and enhanced with additives. The half gallon represents twelve half-cup servings. In the half-cup serving, there are 140 calories, 35 of which are from fat. The four grams of fat represent 6% of the RDA of fat, with 15% of one’s RDA of saturated fat coming in the 3 grams of saturated fat in this ice cream. One serving has 10 mg of cholesterol (that’s 3% of the RDA!) and 55 mg of Sodium (2% RDA). The only other real nutrient is two grams of protein, though there is also 8% of the RDA of Calcium in the Whoppers Ice Cream.

Breyers Blasts has decent ingredients, too. Made primarily of milk, sugar, and corn syrup, the Whoppers frozen dairy dessert is not, technically, an ice cream, though it sure mimics one well! There is nothing unpronounceable in the ingredients list.

Storage/Clean-Up

Breyers Blasts ice cream is both a frozen and a dairy product, so it is pretty obvious that it must be kept frozen in order to remain viable. Kept frozen it remains fresh for months (my half gallon had an expiration date of January 13, 2013).

The Whoppers ice cream is fairly light, but the fudge swirl is sticky and will stain. As well, when the ice cream melts and gets onto fabrics, it will require one to wash it right out. On nonporous surfaces, the ice cream wipes off exceptionally easily.

Overall

The Breyers Blasts Whoppers ice cream is a strangely unpleasant, or at least unsatisfying, dessert experience. The ice cream is broken up in an irksome way by the candy and the candy is not able to fully resonate in the mouth because the ice cream and temperature corrupt it. This makes it surprisingly easy (and no one is more surprised than I that it went this way!) to recommend against this ice cream.
